EPPI - Recorded Talk - Literature, media and their potentialities: learning English and values through stories
Speakers: Lucas Neves (Efficiency Consultoria) and Helen Castelo Branco (Efficiency Consultoria)
- In this workshop, we aim to show how to use language not as an end but as a means for students to communicate better about a diversity of themes/topics in the target language. Also, provide teachers possibilities in the development of personalized material, considering the myriad of resources and genres, as well as not forgetting the importance of language for meaning-making in today’s world (GRAVES, 2016). We must bear in mind that students are now exposed to different types of texts and media throughout their daily lives. In this way, themes and topics, which are discussed in class, are used in a way to not only practice English but also as an extension of the learning process due to the fact that Early and Kendrick (2017) say about the importance of including projects when planning the curriculum, which requires some kind of inquiry. Besides that, we are guided by Barthes (2004) who emphasizes the importance of literature as a way to expand students’ perspectives and enhance their interpersonal skills. To conclude, we must not forget to consider the variety of lifeworlds when assessing and evaluating students, also when designing projects in order to investigate learners’ needs in the context of different areas of knowledge (eg. science, social studies, and language arts). Join us on a journey through picture books, movies, songs, and many more ways to tell stories and learn through them.
