I thought I’d do some digging and found the answer to whether or not unvaccinated American workers can still be eligible for unemployment benefits.
Employees who are fired for refusing to get inoculated against the virus will technically leave a position on their own volition or if they are terminated for cause, such as because they failed to comply with company policy.
Jason Habinsky, chair of New York-based law firm Haynes Boone's labor and employment practice explained: "Generally if you do something bad, commit misconduct, violate company policy, then you are disqualified from receiving unemployment benefits. If you leave on your own or are terminated for a reason, you're not eligible."
He continued: "In the case of not complying with a vaccine mandate, that is like failing to comply with any other employer-related policy. Generally, that is a reason an agency would deny unemployment insurance benefits."
Meanwhile, a recent study from the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy found that faster internet speeds can reduce unemployment rates across America.
In today’s online society, a good internet connection is a necessity on par with water and electricity for millions of Americans using broadband to work, learn, and socialize.
Unfortunately, while 86% of households earning more than $70,000 per year have a solid broadband connection, this percentage drops to 56 percent for those making less than $40,000.
Study author George Zuo explained: “the availability of Internet Essentials led to a 0.9 percentage point increase (1.6 percent) in the probability that an eligible low-income individual was employed. After adjusting for take-up rates, I calculated that enrollees were 8.1 percentage points (14.3 percent) more likely to be employed.”
Finally, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made some very interesting comments regarding the plunging nationwide unemployment rate yesterday in a press conference, outlining how President Biden and his administration are getting the unemployment rate to drop.
She explained: “We’ve created nearly 5 million jobs in eight months. That’s 600,000 new jobs every month, on average — 10 times the rate we inherited. Growth is up. Wages are up. And our unemployment rate is down below 5% — 18 months faster than forecasters predicted earlier this year.”
She continued: “As unemployment drops, our economy is shifting to a labor market where workers have more bargaining power. Ultimately, that’s a good thing for workers to have more bargaining power and be able to choose more.”

In most states, you can still claim state unemployment benefits by visiting your local UI website, uploading your employment history and ID, and filling out the application as genuinely as possible and to the best of your abilities.
For honestly and truthfully filling out the application, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for thousands of dollars.
At this time, the PUA is not distributing disaster relief unemployment benefits. Hopefully we can see this great program once again offering unemployment funds to the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers out there.
