About Unfiltered:
On September 25, 2012, California was the first state to declare access to clean drinking water as a human right. Unfortunately, nearly one million California residents do not have access to a compliant water source -- especially in the Central Valley. Although California has passed measures such as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) in 2014 and the Safe and Affordable Funding for Equity and Resilience (SAFER) bill in 2019, progress toward effective change moves at a glacial pace. California is a leader in cash farm receipts in the United States, accounting for nearly 13 percent of the total agricultural value. Virtually all of the state's fertile farmland is in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys. While the crops receive clean water, many of the rural residents do not. Factors of the contaminated drinking wells include nitrate in the soil, agricultural runoff, and decaying infrastructure. The water has chemicals such as arsenic, high nitrate levels, and forever chemicals like 1-2-3 TCP. Thus, our story hopes to shed light on the overlooked inequities of water quality in California. Our documentary team is reaching out to water quality experts, non-profit organizations, farmworkers, local politicians, filtration plant workers, and many more to immerse our audience in this complex, systemic issue. However, our student film crew cannot accomplish this feat on our own. With your support, our crew can cover the costs required to engage with members of these rural communities and bring their story to life.
